Protection of Personal Information Act (PoPIA) is the Data Protection Law for South Africa which was enacted into law on 1st July 2020. PoPIA has a set of conditions for lawful processing of Personal Information to help protect privacy which is a constitutional right. Non-compliance can result in serious consequences such as fines, bad media exposure (damage to reputation) or even jail time.
